Life in a Closet
Often in our lives, we find ourselves bound by the rules and pressures of society that restrict us to be who we truly are. We are forced to follow the norms, camouflaging ourselves with the outside world, and hiding our true emotions, feelings, desires, and dreams.
That is when we find solace in the shell we create for ourselves- our own ‘Closet’. This closet lets us be who we are, away from the prying eyes and shrewdness of society. In our very own world where we are true to ourselves, unbound and fearless, this closet brings us the feeling of security and liberation that we long for in the world outside. A metaphor for a closed dark space, the closet seems much contrary to it as it provides the most peaceful and unjudged atmosphere to the person who willingly is inside it, free from any problem, pressure, or shame. To others, this closet appears as a dark cage whereas it is filled with the colors of honesty, freedom, and no inhibitions; where one is free to do what he or she wishes for and be true to one’s soul.
With our production ‘Life in a Closet’, the performers depicting these unbinding closets and the obligatory pressures outside it, draw a contrast of life in and out of the closet through adeptly created music, dance, and poetic narration.
The production aims to provoke people to think as individuals who have fallen prey to the societal norms and created their own closets but also as the society, which has been the one creating those pressures leading to the small closets being created around them. ‘Life in a Closet’ is all about telling people that it is high time to come out of their shells to be accepted the way they are in society and break free from these closets to enjoy living outside it with freedom.
